The tour of the South begins here in Montgomery, Alabama

Ok. So I moved to Montgomery, Alabama from California in August 2004. And I have embarked on a self tour of the South, starting with Montgomery. I posted all the pictures I took this weekend. Montgomery has a lot of history. So some notes to go with the pictures.

Dexter Ave. King Memorial Baptist Church -- Martin Luther King Jr. was the pastor there at age 24. The night after Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat, Dr. King organized the boycott in the basement of this church. Now, there are murals memorializing the civil rights movement.

Dexter Ave. is a street full of history. Selma-Montgomery civil rights march took place and ended at the end of Dexter Ave., at the steps of State Capitol. There's a courtyard at the other end of Dexter Ave. where they used to trade slaves. And Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat on this street too. Kinda weird because I work on this street!

State Capitol -- The Alabama flag flies with the US flag. And the Confederate flag still flies high around a statue. This was where Jefferson Davis was inaugurated as the first (and only) president of the Confederate States.

Civil Rights memorial is outside and is open for viewing 24 hours a day. Alabama War Memorial is also outside nad pretty much open for viewing anytime too.

Jefferson Davis was at the First White House of the Confederacy. Unfortunately, I didn't get to tour inside because it was closed.

My tour will continue with more Montgomery sites next weekend, and then beyond!
